Mainstream Country Station Expands Playlist to 12 Songs

LAFAYETTE, LA —Local mainstream country radio station 102.9 WBRO (“The Bro”) announced Thursday a new programming direction wherein its radio hosts would be instructed to select from a list of twelve different songs, up from the usual eleven—which was already 3 songs higher than the industry average.

“After much research, we’ve decided to add Maren Morris’ ‘Girl’ to the rotation. We know we’ll get some push-back here, but we believe the numbers make sense and also there was a company directive that forces us to add one woman to the playlist,” associate program director Jess Staten said in a statement Thursday.

“Of course, we’ll still be playing the other eleven songs over and over and over again—we just really wanted to stand out from the pack by adding one more to the rotation,” he noted. “But the staples like Thomas and Kane and Morgan and uh Morgan and that song where the guy says something kind of pervy about a girl… those will all remain.”

According to Staten, the move was part of a broader initiative to challenge what was possible in the mainstream country radio arena, and to inject a new level of variety into the station’s already adventurous eleven-song playlist.

“I hope this gets all the SJW’s and feminists off our backs” he added.

The Current Poop of Country Radio: September '18

A poop emoji is negative, a strike-thru is positive.

The current Poop Rating of the Mediabase Top 20 is (-14) overall which is a 16 point rise from June (the last time we did this chart). After June's worst score of all time, this is heartening. The best song on the chart is Eric Church's "Desperate Man" The worst is Dylan Scott's pointless "Hooked." There are 2 solo women on the charts and one song by the female-led Sugarland.

The Current Poop of Mainstream Country: January '18

A poop emoji equals a negative rating. A strike-thru poop emoji is a positive rating.

The current Poop Rating of the Mediabase Top 20 is (-10) overall which is 7 point increase from November (the last time we did this chart). That's two Poop Ratings in a row that have shown marked improvement. The biggest surprise is that Thomas Rhett's song doesn't suck, but David Lee Murphy's does. The best song is obviously Chris Stapleton's "Broken Halos." The worst is, yet again, Walker Hayes' "You Broke Up With Me."  There are 2 solo females in the top 20 - as there were in November and as there were in August.

The Current Poop of Mainstream Country: November '17

A poop emoji equals a negative rating. A strike-thru poop emoji is a positive rating.

The current Poop Rating of the Mediabase Top 20 is (-17) overall which is 6 point improvement from August (the last time we did this chart). The best song is Luke Combs' "When It Rains It Pours." The worst is easily Walker Hayes "You Broke Up With Me."  There are 2 solo females in the top 20 - as there were in August. And what do ya' know? Aaron Watson has his first top 20!

While there are some truly awful songs here, the overall quality of the chart is trending upward. Let's hope it continues in this direction.

The Current Poop of Mainstream Country: August '17

A poop emoji equals a negative rating. A strike-thru poop emoji is a positive rating.

The current Poop Rating of the Mediabase Top 20 is (-23) overall which is 6 point improvement from June (the last time we did this chart). The best song is again Midland's "Drinkin' Problem." The worst is a tie: Cole Swindell's putrid "Flatliner" and Chris Lane's terrible "For Her" There are 2 solo females in the top 20, and neither is Kelsea Ballerini, so there's that as a marginal positive.

Things are still bad.

The Current Poop of Country Music (June '17)

A poop emoji equals a negative rating. A strike-thru poop emoji is a positive rating.

The current Poop Rating of the Mediabase Top 20 is (-29) overall which is a hefty 29 point drop (!!!!!) from last October (the last time we did this chart). The best song is Midland's "Drinkin' Problem." The worst is Dylan Scott's substandard bro-country-lite "My Girl." Not only is the Top 20 really pathetic, there is not a single solo female in the bunch.

Things are bad.

Sam Hunt - Body Like a Back Road

A song about sex helped you through rough times? You need therapy.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - The Nashville Sound
If this record offends your sensibilities, you should probably move on over to pop country for however long Donald Trump is in office. It's going to be a rough time for you listening to Americana.
