.99 Review - Jessica Harp
Jessica Harp - Boy Like Me
The People's Take
Boy Like Me (5 Stars) – SOOOOOO EXCITED to finally hear a Jessica Harp solo song!! The CD will absolutely be one of the best country radio has heard!! Can't wait for more to come!!
-#1Tay
(They're all like this)
My Take
Landing, sonically, in the exact center-point between Taylor Swift and Gretchen Wilson but more on the Gretchen side lyrically, the lesser known half of The Wreckers' first single is a surprisingly worthy affair. While not groundbreaking in its sound, the attitude displayed here is a little edgier than most of what you'll hear coming out of Nashville's fairer gender. Basically, she's not really a bad girl, just the kind that likes boys who chase girls like that... and if that makes her a bad girl, so be it. Got that? Good, neither do I, but it's a fun song and a welcome respite from all the goody goody Taylor and Martina in constant rotation. Soundwise, you might not know this was a country track if she didn't twang a few obvious words... drankin', for one.... This fits squarely into the current Clearchannel sound. It's one of the better of that genre, though. She's got a good voice and I got more than I expected here... perhaps Harp has a future in this biz. Her debut single is probably going to be a hit and I'll probably get utterly sick of it and knock a quarter off its value, but for now....
Total value: .74/.99

Introducing...
The Badass-o-meter. It's a purely subjective measurement of badassery based upon manly aspects of various country singers' existence. Don't mistake a high rating for my approval of the singer as an artist, though that is often the case. However, it is always the case that a low rating equals my disapproval of the subject. Click the chart for a closer view.

Countrier Than Thou
Here's a satirical song lyric I wrote a couple of years ago during a particularly overdone round of "country pride" songs on the Nashville charts... Now, with seemingly dozens more country pride songs on the charts and iTunes, as bemoaned on many replies to Country California's recent Questionnaire, it's as timely as ever.
Countrier Than Thou
Backwoods anthems on the radio
Every neck's redder than the one befo'
It's all Skynyrd and pickup trucks
Drinkin, fishin and patriotism
Well boys, if this thing's a competition
I reckon ya'll should just give up
Chorus
Cause I'm countrier than thou, so much countrier than thou
I was born with a plug of Redman in my mouth
Pledge allegiance to the flag, but salute the South
You gotta turn off the rural route to find my house
I'm that much countrier than thou
Raised by my mama in an old deer stand
Built my own pickup with my two bare hands
Wear a cap and a cowboy hat
I'd fight any man but Jesus Christ
Been shot three times and born again twice
I'd like to hear ya'll top that
Hell, I'm countrier than thou, so much countrier than thou
We got a gravel road for Main Street in my hometown
Pledge allegiance to the flag, but salute the South
You gotta turn off the rural route to find my house
I'm that much countrier than thou
Bridge
Tractor, skinny dipping, beer and prison
Kiss my ass if there's anything missin'
Ain't nobody by-God country as me
So don't you never doubt my authenticity
Cause I'm countrier than thou, so much countrier than thou
I learned to drive after I learned to plow
Love to turn Cash, Jones, Cline, Strait, Alan, Hank, Hank Jr., Pride, Conway, Willie and Waylon, Merle and Loretta up real loud
You gotta pull off the rural route to find my house
I'm that much countrier than thou
Spoken tag:
I forget anything? Coe, I love me some Coe! And Skoal!

Toby Keith "God Love Her" Parody
And don't miss the 4 new country Photocrap covers below this post...
Got Mullet
(Parody of Toby Keith's "God Love Her")
Just a hick born in Mobile
Sippy cup of Bud
Mama was a skank
And my daddy was a dud
He always had his thing
in some drunk chick, yeah he was a bad boy
My folks could tell I was somethin'
by the tender age of three
I was crankin' Ratt
And rippin' my jeans
They didn't get upset
They were so proud of me
Their sweet baby
I'm a white trash child
So lock up your daughter
I'm rockin' Twisted Sister and Slaughter
My mama smiled the first time
The barber gave me
The hair-do that ain't stoppin'
It's cut tight on top but the bottom
Long flowing locks of gold, yeah I got 'em
Do my business up front, but
Party in the rear
Ooh wee, got mullet
Oh me, I got mullet
I kissed my mama goodbye
On my first day of school, man
Strutted to the bus stop
With my Crue shirt on, yeah
When this bully came
Said if I wanted to stay alive
I'd let him use his knife
Cut my hair into a bowl
He reached for my mullet
As he grabbed ahold
I took the boy's switchblade
And shoved my shoe soul up his backside
Cause I'm a white trash child
So fool you should watch it
I'm rockin' Guns n' Roses and Slaughter
I tip him big every time
The barber gives me
The do that gets panties droppin'
It's cut tight on top but the bottom
Long flowing locks of gold, yeah I got 'em
Do my business up front, but
Party in the rear
Ooh wee, got mullet
Oh me, I got mullet
Now I'm thirty-five and it's still flarin'
It's so damn sweet, keeps all the girls starin'
They want their fingers round my neck
Playin' with the curls
You see...I got mullet
Oh me, I got mullet
Got mullet

.99 Review - Keith Urban
This is a little late since this is knocking on the door of the top 10 and all, but here ya go...
Keith Urban - Sweet Thing
The People's Take
Keith's Sweet Thing (4 Stars) – Yes, girls keith was probably writing & singing about the newest sweet thing in his life. SUNDAY ROSE, his brand new daughter..... Oh well we can only wish that he is singing this great song to one of us girls....LOL
-bshimoura
Good but still not as good as pre-Pain, Love and the Whole Crazy thing. (3 Stars) – I like it but only about as good as Once in a Lifetime and could be so much more creative. The chorus is incredibly catchy and back to Urban's old country-self but the beginning is a complete ri-off.
A. Listen to the drum intro of "I Told you so", It is exactly the same as "Sweet Thing".
B. What is with the talking for everything but the chorus? I mean seriously you've been working on this for two years and you could only think of a melody for the chorus? I expected so much better. That is the reason it didn't get #1 on the charts.
Please somebody give me back the singer who used to sing amazing #1 hits like "Better Life" and "Tonight I wanna cry". I hear it in there it is just hiding.
-Ricky Suave
He is the sweetest thing from Georgia to Tennesee (5 Stars) – I think Keith and his music are the best thing in the whole world, he rocks so much!
Keep it up as the days go by.
-Duncan Kane
My Take
Welcome to Urban country. Rocking guitar, addictive hook, up-tempo tune, chick-friendly lyrics, a little plucking banjo so it qualifies as country. There you have it... the formula for a successful Keith Urban song. So do I like it? Well... yes. It's a great driving song and I found myself tapping my foot and singing along (making sure no one was looking - I don't live by the "dance like no one's watching" axiom) by the third play. I'm a snooty alt-country, traditional country and indie rock fan so I shouldn't like this (or admit it if I do)... but I dig it. It's completely unoriginal and it's perfect Clearchannel background music... but it's so well done. It's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but one made with fresh Sara Lee white bread, crunchy Jif, the sweetest grape jelly and served with a big glass of cold milk. The Checklist isn't really necessary this time - Keith songs are hits, period - but we'll use it anyway. Hey, my first "positive" Ninety-nine Cent Review!
