Maddie and Tae - Girl in a Country Song (you must hear or read this!)

Maddie and Tae are a new act who are coming onto the scene with quite the announcement of their arrival. The following song (I transcribed the lyrics also) not only takes down bro-country's treatment of women, it also directly calls out some of the offenders - not by name but by catch phrases and hooks from their tunes. We can discuss (or Triggerman can - he's better at that stuff) the paradox/irony/ramifications of a song like this being released by one of Borchetta's labels later, but for now just enjoy. The link is a stream of a wma file (which won't work on a Mac unless you have a VLC Player or something similar). Sorry, that's all that's available at the moment.

Girl in a Country Song
(Written by Maddie (Marlow), Tae(lynn Elizabeth Dye), and Aaron Scherz;
Performed by Maddie & Tae)

Well I wish I had some shoes on my two bare feet
And it's gettin' kinda cold in these painted-on cut-off jeans
I hate the way this bikini top chafes
Do I really have to wear it all day?
(Yeah baby)

I hear you over there on your tailgate whistlin'
Sayin' "Hey girl," but you know I ain't listenin'
Cause I got a name and to you it ain't
pretty little thing, honey or baby
It's driving me red red red red red red redneck crazy

Being the girl in a country song
How in the world did it go so wrong?
Like all we're good for is looking good for
you and your friends on the weekend, nothin' more
We used to get a little respect
Now we're lucky if we even get
To climb up in the truck, keep our mouth shut, ride along
And be the girl in a country song

Well, shakin' my moneymaker ain't ever made me a dime
And there ain't no sugar for you in this shaker of mine
Tell me one more time you gotta get you some of that
Sure I'll slide on over, but you're gonna get slapped
These days it ain't easy being that…

Girl in a country song
How in the world did it go so wrong?
Like all we're good for is looking good for
you and your friends on the weekend, nothin' more
We used to get a little respect
Now we're lucky if we even get
To climb up in the truck, keep our mouth shut, ride along
And be the girl in a country song

Yep, yep, yep

Aw naw,
Conway and George Strait
Never did it this way
Back in the old days
Aw naw,
We ain't a cliche
That ain't no way
To treat a lady

Like a girl in a country song
How in the world did it go so wrong?
Like all we're good for is looking good for
you and your friends on the weekend, nothin' more
We used to get a little respect
Now we're lucky if we even get
To climb up in the truck, keep our mouth shut, ride along
Down some dirt road we don't even wanna be on
And be the girl in a country song

(Spoken)
Yeah baby
I ain't your tan legged Juliet
Can I put on some real clothes now?

Aw naw

  1. Let me guess...written by Dallas Davidson??? Trying to play both sides of the coin? If it is not him it is probably one of the other writers who has been pumpin' out the bro-tastic hits (trash).

    1. Says it's written by the two ladies and someone named Aaron Scherz.

  2. And is is slighlty ironic that in the accompanying photo that one is dressed in "painted on jeans" and the other in shorts (cut offs?) so short they can not be seen in the photo?

    1. Newsflash: women can wear clothes for reasons other than pleasing the male gaze. In fact, women can wear whatever clothes they want and men should not use women's clothing choice as a reason to disrespect, objectify, or dismiss them.

  3. Will Maddie & Tae tour this summer with Dan & Shay in the "prefabricated pop country duo whose names rhyme" tour?

  4. Wow...lotta hate in those first three comments. I agree it is pop sounding, but what good is an anti-bro-country song if it won't get played on the radio stations that play bro-country?

Gotta attack the enemy on their own turf.

    1. Since it is on Borchetta's lable I would be willing to bet the song is not an actual womans reaction to the bro sound. Likely it was not written by a woman, just the same guys who write the bro songs trying to cash in on the female discontent in how they are being portrayed in order to line Borhcetta's pockets some more.

If those two girls wrote the song I will eat my hat. In Nashville only the ugly people write their own songs.

    3. It is the ten gallon type. Good thing I have a big appeatite today!

    4. I haven't discounted the possibility that Borchetta suspects that bro-country may start to wane soon and is trying to get ahead of a trend.

      He is a shrewd businessman.

    5. Actually, I can assure you that while I do not believe this particular song was completely written by the girls, they are definitely cowriters. I don't know anything about Tae, but Maddie is an extremely talented young lady who writes music and always has (Source: went to her high school).

    6. There's a few articles out about them (and there's a youtube video of them talking about their entrance to the country genre) that tell you all you need to know. The girls are cowriters of the song, and they did come up with the idea, so it's not just a ploy to get money.

  5. Pretty sure those first three comments were from the same person. It's understandable to be untrusting of anything that comes from the "big machine," but the song was written by the girls (ahem, ladies!) along with another co-writer I'm not familiar with. The message is strong, so I'm behind it. If Dallas Davidson or the like writes a backlash song, I'll call bullshit. -Trailer

Like you said I do not trust anything that comes out of Trashville anymore.

  6. I don't like this because I like bro-country. I do like the one trashing Get Me Some of That and Hey Girl because even I hate those. You ain't getting any of this, boy.

  7. This is my new favorite thing.

Also, it's always nice to see the Shelton/Bryan/Young/etc. superfans hit the comments immediately - like cockroaches on birthday cake, they are - to trashtalk a new track like this.

    1. I'm a Chris Young superfan and I think this song looks awesome.

(Fortunately, Chris wasn't responsible for any of the more egregious lyrics quoted in the song! :-) )

  8. Whoo! way to go ladies! I think it's great that people are openly bashing "bro-country" now bring back the steel guitars! bring back Mark Chesnutt!

  9. I LOVE Shelton/Bryan/Young/etc., but at the same time love this song too. Wouldn't be surprised to see these girls tour with one of the Bro's either. I am offended that people think only the ugly write in Nashville, thus the girls didn't co-write this song. Cause, yes they did!!!

  10. Even Chase Rice tweeted that he loves the song. There is a message here, but I don't think it was intended to be taken so seriously by some.

  11. Maybe the message wasn't intended "to be taken so seriously by some." But it should be: these bro-country songs seem to value women only for their looks. There's a huge difference between one or two songs about sexy half naked girls shaking their asses and an entire barrage of them. Taken together, these songs risk sending to women the message that the best/only way to attract male attention is to focus on looks and encourage men to objectify you. That's not a healthy message in today's society and it deserves to be mocked loudly and seriously.

  12. Also, an earlier comment says, the song probably wasn't written by women but rather by "just the same guys who write the bro songs trying to cash in on the female discontent in how they are being portrayed in order to line Borhcetta's pockets some more"

Even if that is true, this is a good development. Whoever wrote it clearly suspects that the "bro-country" songs are rankling some women (and probably men). Whoever wrote it probably has come to realize that the "bro-country" songs represent idiotic and backward thinking. Good for them!

Farcer says that if Dallas Davidson or similar wrote this song, he'd call bullshit. Yeah, I would one one level question his sincerity. I'd suspect he might have written it not because he believes it but because he feels it could make money. But, even so, I'd be glad. In fact, if someone like Dallas Davidson wrote a song like this, it could be a good thing. Maybe the process of having to write a song from the perspective of a female who wants to be seen as more than Tits and Ass might force Davidson to open his mind a bit and come face to face with some of the problems in his thinking about women.

Finally: Re the comment that it seems a bit hypocritical that Madie and Tae are dressed up as sex symbols and even wearing stuff the bro-country singers seem to like while singing this song. I agree. It seems to send mixed messages. Though in their defense: the problem with bro-country isn't that they like scantily clad women. Its that they see women as nothing more than objects. perhaps Maddie and Tae will dress sexily and be more than sex objects, but singers of thoughtful music. If so, I think its fine if they are sexual and intelligent. After all, humans are sexual, intellectual, emotional, et cetera. Its fine if they play up several of these aspects. I just hope one doesn't dominate, as in the bro country garbage.

  14. Up until the middle of the 1900s men were extremely polite to women. the very idea of calling the women by their first name in public was not kosher. while i am not saying that men should revert to that level of respect, I am saying that they should remember that women are people and people should be treated with respect. Do any of you remember the causes of the civil war from your hisory class? the causes of the civil war were numerous. the main cause, however, was not to free the slaves; it was for EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL PEOPLE! equal rights does not just mean women voting or colored people being treated normally; it means the everyone gets treated with respect. Men, though self control may not be in your vocabularies, please grab a dictionary. While I stand for women being treateed with respect, self control would help you treat yourselves with respect. Lost? Ok, your bodies are precious. Why waste yourself on someone who you are not ever going to see again(women this goes for you too). Please save yourselves for the one you want to spend the rest of your life with.
Women, also, when you complain, please remember that you brought this upon yourselves by dressing the way you do- sluttily.
I know I am only thirteen, but I hope that you will all take my words into account. thanx for reading!

  15. The song was too pop-music to call country, but it was funny. The painted on jeans and short-shorts pic was faptastic. I hope they release nude pics soon.
